Chapter Fourteen

GINA’S NEW place was on Massachusetts Avenue, which was known as the arts district of town. There was Theatre on the Square, a comedy club, and enough little artsy-fartsy shops to satisfy the Bohemian in anyone. There was also one of the larger gay nightclubs on Mass, a place called the Metro. Gina’s apartment was above a little flower shop, and she had a good view of the entrance of the Metro from her living room window. She said she didn’t pick the place for the sole reason of watching the young gaylings coming and going, but I didn’t believe her.

I missed her old house, but the new digs had class and some extra added features. I wasn’t kidding when I said it was the safest place on Earth. Not only was it charmed up to the hilt, but it was inhabited by a Netherbeing that was completely besotted with Gina. This creature—not really a ghost because it had never lived—had no form I could make out, but made its presence known by controlling the lights and speaking in a gruff voice.

Netherbeings were Earth spirits, if that made any sense, and had no actual gender, but as this one sounded astoundingly like Emma Stone being cross with someone, we referred to it as Emma.

I was right behind Gina as she entered the apartment, so I heard Emma’s sigh of contentment as her favorite being returned home. For me and Robbie, Emma grunted, which was her way of saying we were acceptable, and she giggled for Daisy, but when Graig and Laura came in, the lighting dimmed immediately and there was thunder in her voice.

“Who dares to infiltrate my dwelling?”

The young couple froze in place, and Gina had to physically move them aside so she could close the door. “It’s okay, Emma,” she said breezily. “They’re friends.”

Emma wasn’t convinced. “One of them is tainted.”

“Yeah, well, I can take care of that,” Gina replied.

The room felt hot and airless, and for a second, I thought Emma was going to stand firm, but then the lights came up a little and the mood abated.

“If you say so,” Emma said.

There was a rustling in the walls, and I think Emma went away to sulk.

Laura looked like she might faint. “Your apartment talks to you?”

Gina smiled sweetly. “She does more than talk. If I hadn’t convinced her that you were friends, she’d have crushed you to a pulp. Pretty protective, our Emma.”

Graig and Laura were clutching each other tightly, and I could tell they were thinking they might have made a mistake, aligning themselves with us. I thought they needed reassurance, so I explained who Emma was, adding, “The great thing about having a Netherbeing here is that no one, and I mean no one, can enter without Emma’s permission. She can keep out humans, ghosts, witches, werewolves, demons, and even zombie dogs if she chooses. They can’t even sense that this place exists. So you’re safe as long as you’re within these walls.”

By the worry in Graig’s eyes, I wasn’t sure I succeeded.
